How to get to Adare during the Ryder Cup 2027: flights, ferries and driving

Adare is easy to reach. In September 2027, so is everyone else.

The Ryder Cup comes to Adare Manor that month, with more than 250,000 spectators expected across the week. Flights, ferries and hire cars into the south-west will be busier than ever. Plan early and the journey is simple. Leave it late and it won’t be.

Flying in

Four airports are in range. One is much closer than the rest.

• Shannon (SNN): the closest, about 39km from Adare, or around 35 minutes by car. It has direct flights from London Heathrow and several US cities. If you can get a seat, take it.
• Cork (ORK): about 95km, or around 1 hour 15 minutes, with good UK and European links.
• Kerry (KIR): smaller, around 90 minutes away, with a handful of UK routes.
• Dublin (DUB): about 210km, or around 2 hours 30 minutes, almost all on the motorway. It has the most flights by a distance.

Shannon fares will climb as the week gets closer. If it’s full or eye-wateringly expensive, fly into Dublin. The drive across is easy.

By ferry

Bringing your own car? Take the ferry. It’s the easy way to bring your clubs.

• Holyhead to Dublin: the busiest route, at around three and a half hours.
• Liverpool to Dublin: a longer, overnight option from the north of England.
• Fishguard or Pembroke to Rosslare: handy from south Wales and southern England. Rosslare is around three hours’ drive from Adare.
• Cherbourg to Rosslare: direct from France for travellers from the continent.

Travelling with golf clubs

Flying with clubs? Add them to your booking early. Airlines limit sports equipment on each flight, and a lot of bags will be heading to Shannon that week. A hard case is worth it. Or keep it simple: drive and take the ferry, and the boot does the work.

Driving in Ireland

Hire cars at Shannon and Cork are limited, and demand that week will be exceptional. Reserve yours as soon as your flights are booked. If you’re new to driving in Ireland:

• Drive on the left.
• Distances and speed limits are in kilometres.
• Pay tolls and fuel in euros.
• Country roads are narrow and winding, so add time to what the sat nav says.

By train and bus

Trains run from Dublin Heuston to Limerick Colbert in around two to two and a half hours, sometimes with a change at Limerick Junction. From Limerick, take a local bus or a taxi to Adare. Taxis will be thin on the ground during the week of the golf, so don’t rely on one at short notice.

Landing at Shannon

Shannon is a small, easy airport. You’ll be off the plane, through passport control and at the car hire desk far quicker than at a big hub, most weeks at least. That week, expect queues. Pre-book your car, have your documents ready and download offline maps before you land, as signal can drop out on the country roads.

Flying from the US

Shannon has one big advantage for American visitors: US Customs and Border Protection preclearance. You clear US immigration in Ireland before you fly home, and land in the States as a domestic arrival. After a big week, that’s worth a lot. Direct routes vary by season, so check what’s flying in September 2027 before you book.

From Northern Ireland

Belfast to Adare is around four hours by car, via Dublin and the motorway network. It’s an easy day’s drive. Break it up with lunch on the way down.

Getting around once you’re here

Adare village is small and walkable. Once you’re parked, leave the car. Main Street, the pubs, the park and the river are all within a few minutes of each other. For days out further afield, you’ll want wheels. Plan the drive, allow for the traffic and don’t count on a taxi that week.

Timing your trip

Arrive a day early. You’ll dodge the worst of the traffic, settle in and see Adare before the crowds. Leave a day late if you can. The Monday after the final matches will be the busiest travel day of the week, at every airport and on every road out of Limerick.

During the week of the golf

Expect traffic management, road closures and park-and-ride systems. That’s standard for an event this size. Details are usually confirmed closer to the time, so check the official travel information before you set off each day and give yourself plenty of time.
